Perry High School Speech and Debate Named Among Top 100 Programs in the Nation

The National Speech & Debate Association has named Perry High School’s Speech and Debate program one of its Top 100 in the country, ranking 83rd among more than 3,000 schools nationwide for the 2025-2026 school year. In a letter to the district, Executive Director J. Scott Wunn called the honor the most prestigious membership award the Association can bestow upon a school.

“This is a true team victory,” said Superintendent Nate Stutz. “Congratulations to the students who competed, served as leaders and contributed to the program throughout the 2025-2026 school year. This recognition also belongs to the coaches and teachers who guided and supported these students and helped make this accomplishment possible.”

Perry also earned membership in the National Speech & Debate Association’s prestigious Societe de 300 after students in the program earned 390 or more strength points during the 2025-2026 school year. Students earn Honor Society points and degrees through participation, competition, leadership and service, with those achievements contributing to their school’s overall strength points.

The National Speech & Debate Association recognized Perry’s program for helping students develop essential skills in communication, research, listening, writing and organization. These skills extend well beyond competition, preparing students to communicate effectively and confidently in college, careers and everyday life.

“Speech and Debate challenges students to think critically, communicate clearly, listen carefully and put their ideas into action,” Stutz said. “To see Perry ranked among the top 100 programs in the nation is an outstanding accomplishment. These students and their coaches have worked hard to earn this recognition, and they are a source of pride for our entire district.”
