Perry Local School District
Keith Brown

At its January 19, 2023 meeting, the Perry Local School District Board of Education approved the necessary final resolution for a 5-year emergency operating levy set to appear on the May 2, 2023, ballot.

At its January 19, 2023 meeting, the Perry Local School District Board of Education approved the necessary final resolution for a 5-year emergency operating levy set to appear on the May 2, 2023, ballot. This levy will be for 7.3 mills and cost taxpayers approximately $256 per year for each $100,000 of the County Auditor's appraised home value.

"As always, Perry Local Schools seeks to responsibly meet the needs of our district," said Superintendent Nathan Stutz. "The decision to pursue this levy stemmed from a thorough evaluation of our current financial realities."

If approved by voters, the 7.3 mill emergency operating levy would generate an estimated annual revenue of $6,200,000 that would maintain current levels of operation within the school district. These funds could be used to pay for day-to-day operations such as maintaining appropriate staffing levels, upkeep of the district’s technological standards, and investment in programs unique to Perry.

"Approval of this resolution puts Perry Local Schools one step closer to the completion of Phase 2 of the district’s Long-Term Improvement Plan," said Superintendent Nathan Stutz.

The Long-Term Improvement Plan is a multi-step initiative designed to address the district's facilities and financial needs. The first phase saw the passing of a bond issue in May 2020, earmarked for new construction addressing the district’s facilities improvement plan. Phase 2, the 7.3 mill operating levy, is the district’s first request for new operating dollars in nearly 27 years. The last time the district passed a new operating levy was in March 1996. At that time, an 18.9 mill operating levy (combination of a 9.4 mill renewal and a 9.5 mill new operating levy) was passed. Today, the effective millage on this levy is 9.8 mill. This levy has been renewed every 5 years since its inception and will represent Phase 3 of the Long-Term Improvement Plan.
